Challenge: Unity Temple is, by most accounts, an architectural masterpiece. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the building & oversaw its construction, which was completed in 1909. The Temple underwent few changes over the years, but in the 1950’s the congregation, pressed for space, remodeled the lower level, adding bathrooms, classrooms, & storage areas. Unfortunately, the remodeling was not at all in concert with the rest of the spectacular structure & quickly became dated. This renovation lasted until 2006, when our company was hired to undo the previous work.

Solution: Working with a local designer, we developed a comprehensive plan that incorporated details found elsewhere in the Temple into the lower level. We made many custom architectural elements from red oak to match the wood used throughout the rest of the building. We were able to locate single panel oak doors through one of our suppliers & added a simple band moulding around the panels to better replicate the originals. We then made custom jambs, surrounding trim, & -using hardware in an oil rubbed bronze finish – installed the new doors in the bathrooms & classrooms throughout the lower level.
