Challenge: Create a way to separate the den from the kitchen in this vintage house while adding visual interest to the space.

Solution: While pocket doors would have been an ideal solution, they couldn’t be installed, as the walls between the kitchen & den were chock full of numerous mechanical lines, leaving no room for the doors or the hardware. Instead, we moved the pocket door hardware outside the wall, mounting it directly above the opening & covering it with a valance reflective of the woodwork in the rest of the house. We also matched the new doors to the existing 2 panel style, and then trimmed everything to match. When the doors are slid open, they permit unimpeded traffic flow between the two rooms. In the closed position, they provide privacy &allow the space to be used as a guest bedroom when necessary.
